Wedding Traditions in Ukraine
A Wedding in Toporivtsi, Bukovyna

Toporivtsi is a large village with some 5000 residents, just a few kilometres northwest of the large city of Chernivtsi, in Bukovyna. The following description is based on the wedding of Svitlana Rusnak and Vasyl' Ilashchuk in 1995. It contains many interesting ritual elements, though it varies in many ways from the generalized scheme presented in the first section. The main ceremonies of the wedding took place over two days, Saturday and Sunday. The events of Saturday were called the svatannia while the Sunday activities were referred to as the vesillia.
