Ukrainian-Canadian weddings are a synthesis of traditions and rituals from the
ancestral homeland and the new environment. This section examines how earlier
traditions were adapted in the creation of new, modified practices. Once an
initial Ukrainian-Canadian structure was established, it continued to change
throughout the last century. In this section we present two general
descriptions, one from before 1940 and another outlining the tradition since
approximately 1970. The descriptions illustrate how earlier traditions were
adapted in the creation of new, modified practices. This section will also
highlight some regional differences which are becoming apparent.
